EP3: The journey to becoming a born again truth teller with Kate Rizzi
Tuesday Jul 30, 2019
Tuesday Jul 30, 2019
“It goes all the way back to my childhood and being really embarrassed and ashamed of my circumstances”
In Episode 3 of Turning the Tables I interview Kate Rizzi an educator living in Maryland USA.
Having a father who was gay and growing up as a Catholic in the 1960’s was a challenge to say the least for Kate. The realisation of this was only revealed in her early 20’s when her father ,who was dying of cancer, showed her some military papers that revealed that, unbeknown to Kate, he had been ‘honourably discharged’ from the air force for being gay.
In addition ,having a mother who was an addict, meant the truth, in the early years of Kate’s life, was hard to come by and cultivated a story telling proclivity in her which she described as a ‘management issue’!
But the adversity of her upbringing also gave her an ability from an early age to “look beyond the obvious surface level of life”.
This ability has ultimately driven her, after originally working as a management consultant, to dedicate her life to being an educator with a passion to help people of all ages to maximise their learning ability.
Over 20 years Kate has taught across subject matters as diverse as maths and philosophy and worked from elementary level to university. She is a local and national speaker and presenter across the US on education.
She is now a practicing holistic educational consultant committed to developing a better learning practice that embraces the individual not the system. Now the CEO of ‘Uncharted Territory of You’ she creates customised learning experiences that help students accomplish their goals.
Listen to Kate tell her fascinating story of how the adversity in her life became a gift that gave her an insight into people that has driven her love of learning and her ability to help others to overcome barriers to reaching their potential.

EP 1:Overcoming gender prejudice and upbringing with Linda Hodgson
Tuesday Jul 16, 2019
Tuesday Jul 16, 2019
"So I grew up with a lot of stress, anxiety and anger around me"
This first episode of Turning the tables features Linda Hodgson who has had a successful career in advertising and laterly as a strategic planner. But her journey has been far from easy, as she had to battle against the difficulties of a poverty strickened childhood and her mothers depression.
'I decided I was going to lift myself up out of all that and make something of myself"
Linda's story is an inspiration for anyone looking to overcome challenges and adversity in their life
School was a challenge but as she relates in the interview "Shakespeare saved me", as she found an unlikely avenue to shine in English Literature, reading Shakespeare.
Linda was determined not to let her childhood hold her back starting her work career as a secretary at the BBC and then in advertising. Her ambition to progress in her career was confronted with the prejudice of gender as she was dismissed a mere 'PA' too limited to progress into a more important role.
She refused to give up her ambition, every barrier put in front of her was challenged and confronted as she eventually progressed to a senior role in advertising responsible for multi-million dollar accounts. She became a shining light for other women looking to progress in the industry.
Latterly in her career Linda has practiced an open and collaborative way of working with people which has ultimately led her to now become a Celebrant helping people create and deliver a compassionate non religious funeral for their loved ones.
At the end of the episode Linda and I share the insights and mindsets that people can apply for themselves in their lives to help overcome adversity and life challenges.
